The Student Account Financial Policy provides students and families with important financial information. All students and families are encouraged to become familiar with this policy. 

Topics include financial holds and past due balances, tuition leave refund policy and schedule, Title IV authorization, overpayments, returned payments, and more.

Student account billing is entirely electronic; no paper billing statements are generated or mailed. All billing activity may be viewed through payment.brown.edu.  Our  Student Account Payment System Guide provides detailed instructions for using our billing system.

Review our Student Account EBill Schedule to learn about the billing and due dates for each semester. All balances must be paid in a timely manner, by the due date. Refer to Brown's policies regarding Financial Holds and Past Due Balances that impact registration and enrollment.

Billing Statements - these are a snapshot of the student account at the time of billing. 

Account Activity - this is an up-to-date accounting of all student account charges or credits. It includes activity that occurred before, on, and after the billing statement date.  

Online Masters Students billing for each semester will occur after you register for courses. If you register for courses after the billing statements date for the semester, you will receive an email notification the following week to advise you that charges were posted to your student account. 

The Student Financial Responsibility Agreement (SFRA) is a commonly used tool among universities for ensuring that students are aware of important financial information. The SFRA is between the student and Brown University and outlines the financial obligations and responsibilities students agree to when enrolling at Brown University. The SFRA outlines important billing, payment, and collection information. 

All students must complete the SFRA in Banner Self Service each year prior to registering for classes.  Students cannot register for courses if the annual SFRA has not been completed.  Once the SFRA is completed, the registration hold is removed automatically and immediately.

All recipients of federal financial aid (including Direct Loans) are instructed to complete the Title IV Authorization form through Banner Self Service.  This important form instructs Brown on how to apply the federal funding toward your student account charges. 

Title IV financial aid funds are automatically credited only toward tuition, fees, and on-campus housing and meal plan charges.

Students are allowed to authorize Title IV financial aid funds to pay other student account charges (bookstore, health insurance, pharmacy, library fees, etc.) 

Students choose Yes or No to the following 3 items:

1. Apply Title IV funds toward other student account charges (beyond tuition, fees, and on-campus housing and meals)
2. Apply Title IV funds toward outstanding prior year charges (up to $200)
3. Retain excess Title IV funds toward future charges for the current award year

By selecting Yes to all 3 items, federal aid funds are used toward direct billed educational expenses.  By selecting No, students will receive a refund of the excess federal aid (above tuition, fees, housing/meals) and will be required to pay any other student account charges out of pocket. 

In order for Brown to issue the annual tax forms as required by the IRS, your social security number (SSN) or tax identification number (TIN) must be on file. Please ensure this is completed through Banner Self Service.

All students should complete these items through payment.brown.edu:

1. If family members need to view & pay your bill, you will need to set them up as Authorized Users.
2. Setup your ERefund Profile to receive any eligible credit balance refunds electronically.
3. Consent to receive your IRS 1098T form electronically (used for tax credits).

The optional Installment Payment Plan (IPP) allows students and authorized users to pay one semester's charges over a number of monthly installments.

Loan eligibility and processing is administered by the respective Office of Financial Aid in partnership with Student Financial Services. The Office of Financial Aid (OFA) determines loan eligibility and creates award offers. (OFA: Undergraduate Students, Graduate Students, Medical Students.)

Student Financial Services (SFS) notifies students to accept or decline their offered loans, processes PLUS Loan applications, notifies borrowers to complete loan requirements, and disburses loans to students' accounts. 

All financial aid recipients should ensure that they complete any unsatisfied requirements through Banner Self Service. This can include documentation that OFA requested to determine eligibility and/or requirements associated to loans that you have been awarded (promissory notes, entrance counseling, etc).

Our Loan Process page provides details on applying for and receiving loans - including how to complete loan requirements. If loans are part of your plan, you'll want to borrow wisely to keep your loan debt as low as possible. 

If you reported to Brown that you anticipate to receive support from outside scholarship agencies, college savings plans, or other outside sources, Brown will place a temporary memo credit on your student account in that amount. Any unpaid memo credits for anticipated support are removed from students accounts on October 15^th for Fall and on February 15^th for Spring. Students are responsible for paying any remaining balances.

Review any unpaid memo credits that appear on your student account through the Student Account Payment System. 

Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is automatically billed to your student account every year. If you have adequate alternate coverage, you may be able to waive SHIP by the waiver deadline. If you are an aided student and you do not currently have health insurance, complete the waiver to be considered for a scholarship to help cover the cost.

All housing information and policies are handled by Residential Life. Residential Life submits charges to Student Financial Services to be reflected on the student's account. For questions regarding changes to housing students should reference their room agreement.

All meal plan information and policies are handled by Dining Services. Dining Services submit charges to Student Financial Services to be reflected on the student's account. For questions regarding changes to dining, students should reference their meal agreement.
